Dear Friends,

I would like to introduce you to Matt, who is a wonderful example of the success that can be achieved through The Arc of San Diego’s job training program.  These programs help individuals build marketable skills for our local workforce and lead to paid employment.

Matt

Matt’s independent spirit and the services provided by The Arc of San Diego, supported Matt in his transition from a high school student to a productive working adult.  Matt has a developmental disability and The Arc of San Diego empowers persons with disabilities, and their families, by working in partnership to create opportunities to achieve their individual goals within the community.

As a student at Mount Miguel High School, Matt began working as part of a small crew at a public works maintenance facility in Rancho San Diego. This experience allowed him to grow and join a larger crew detailing buses for Laidlaw Transportation in El Cajon.  After two years detailing buses and the constant training support provided by The Arc of San Diego’s team of job coaches, Matt was ready take the next step in his working career: one in which he could work a majority of the time independently.

Through The Arc of San Diego’s job placement program, he was hired as a courtesy clerk at the Albertson’s grocery store in Lemon Grove.  Matt was recognized by Albertson’s earlier this year as an Employee of the Month and has earned several wage increases based upon his work performance.  At 25-years of age and because of his employment, Matt now lives on his own in an apartment with a roommate and assistance from an independent living coach.  When he’s not working, Matt plays basketball for a team in the Sports for Exceptional Athletes program.

Please help The Arc of San Diego continue assisting people like Matt by supporting our “Building Toward Self-Sufficiency” Capital Campaign. The Arc of San Diego is currently constructing, the Sulpizio Family Arc Center, at 3030 Market Street in San Diego.  This new facility will enable The Arc of San Diego to serve even more people like Matt. For many people with disabilities – we provide hope for the future that would otherwise not be available.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me at (858) 715-3780 or via e-mail at ceo@arc-sd.com for more information about our organization.

With thanks for your generosity,

Anne Hoffman

President & CEO

Building Toward Self-Sufficiency

The Arc of San Diego has outlined multi-year plans for renovation and construction of facilities throughout San Diego County.

Phase I                              Land purchase at North Shores                  $985,000

completed in 2001

Phase II                             Renovation of 3080 Market Street              $500,000

completed in 2004

Phase III                            Central San Diego Center                            $3,400,000

goal                                 Construction of new building

Phase III of our capital campaign is one of the most crucial projects due to the age and deterioration of the existing building.  Resources raised will be used to construct a new 16,000 square foot building at 3035 G Street and establish an endowment fund for the center.  The facility will include a community room, classrooms, garden & fountain, meeting room, and administrative building.

For more information about our Capital Campaign, please contact Jennifer Navarra, Director of Development & Marketing, at (858) 715-3780 or jnavarra@arc-sd.com.
